Growing food Literacy Project (GFL)

The GFL is a collaboration between UCLA and Mark Twain Middle School. Sponsored by a grant from the UC Global Food Initiative, UCLA students teach middle schoolers about "food literacy.” This project led to students starting the “No Waste Wednesdays” campaign to address student food waste at lunch.

student Internship program

Each quarter, we provide training to a handful of UCLA students from the fields of Public Health, Food Studies, Service Learning, and other community service interested individuals. Students are immersed in our program: involved in building curriculum, teaching, supporting garden activities, and providing overall support to the Seeds to Plate team.

This is a great opportunity for students to get a taste of community work, learn about gardening and food, and become stronger leaders.

GROWING FOOD LITERACY LEADERSHIP PROJECT (GFLL)

Building on the success of the GFL, we focused our efforts on building the leadership of the Spanish-speaking parents in the school given that over 75% of the students are Latinos. Parents participate in nutrition classes and take the lead in the design and maintenance our medicinal plant garden. We work towards strengthening the collective voice of parents at the school.
